What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Websites also use similar browser storage (called local storage) to remember settings between visits.

Cookies and storage we use

Necessary

  • Your cookie choice (cookie "ib9_consent", 12 months): remembers whether you chose "Accept all" or "Necessary only", so we don’t ask on every visit.
  • Your language (cookie "ib9_lang", 12 months): the edition you picked (English, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil or Malayalam), so the home page opens in your language.
  • Your place (local storage, until you change it): the city or state you picked, or that your browser’s location found, so Near Me shows local news first. It stays in your browser; we use it only to fetch local stories.
  • Alert reminder (local storage): remembers that you closed the “Get alerts” card, so we don’t show it again soon.

These are needed for the website to work the way you set it, so they don’t need your consent.

Advertising (only if you choose “Accept all”)

The website may show ads served by Google AdSense. If you choose “Accept all”, Google and its partners may use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. If you choose “Necessary only”, we ask Google to show only non-personalised ads, which are based on the page you’re reading rather than on you; Google may still use cookies for things such as limiting how often you see an ad and preventing fraud. News alerts (push notifications)

If you turn on alerts, your browser gives us a push address and keys, which we store with the place you picked, to send you breaking news and big local stories. This isn’t a cookie. Turn alerts off with the bell button at the top of the page or in your browser’s site settings, and we delete them.

Your choices

  • Change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
  • Your browser’s settings let you see and delete cookies and site data, and block them. Blocking necessary cookies and storage may make parts of the website stop remembering your settings.
  • You can also opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com.
