Srinagar, Nov 04: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir of Crime Branch J&K has filed a chargesheet against a Pulwama resident for allegedly issuing a cheque bearing forged signatures to settle a business liability of Rs 35 lakh. The cheque was reportedly issued in the name of his deceased father and dishonoured by the bank, officials said on Wednesday.
In a press statement, an EOW spokesperson said, the chargesheet has been filed in case FIR No. 44/2026 under Sections 318(2), 336(3) and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Pulwama, against Mushtaq Ahmad Yatoo, son of Ali Mohammad Yatoo, resident of Chanpora, Rajpora, Pulwama.
"The case was registered on the basis of a written complaint alleging that the complainant was in a partnership business with the accused. During the settlement of business accounts, an amount of Rs. 35 lakh was found due from the accused. To clear this liability, the accused allegedly issued a cheque to the complainant. However, the cheque was dishonoured by the bank as it had been issued in the name of the accused’s father, who had passed away two years earlier, and the accused had allegedly affixed his own signatures on it," the spokesperson said.
During the course of investigation, the allegations were substantiated and the charges against the accused were found to be established.
Accordingly, the investigation was concluded by SI Farooq Ahmad and the chargesheet was filed before the competent court for judicial determination.
SSP EOW Kashmir advised the public to maintain proper documentation of business transactions, verify financial instruments, and remain vigilant against fraudulent practices to safeguard their hard-earned money.
